Remittances Drive Ghana’s Development: NDPC DG Calls for Coordinated Action to Harness Diaspora Potential

At a side event held during the Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2) in Doha on Tuesday, 4 November 2025, the Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr. Audrey Smock Amoah, underscored that harnessing the potential of the Ghanaian diaspora is no longer optional but a critical development priority.
She outlined Ghana’s ongoing efforts to integrate migration and diaspora contributions into the national development agenda.
With remittance inflows increasing from USD 3.73 billion in 2020 to USD 6.65 billion in 2024, Dr. Amoah noted that remittances now exceed foreign direct investment and external grants, significantly supporting entrepreneurship, education, and community development.
She therefore called for stronger coordination among government institutions, development partners, the private sector, and the diaspora to make migration a catalyst for national transformation and resilience.
Speaking at the plenary session of the Summit, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, reaffirmed Ghana’s long-standing commitment to social justice, equality, and inclusive development.
She highlighted that even before the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration, Ghana had prioritised poverty reduction and human development through successive national frameworks. From the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy to the current Resetting Ghana Framework (2026–2029), the Minister emphasised that the country’s mission remains to put people first and ensure that no one is left behind on the path to shared prosperity.
