National Development Planning Commission
The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) has pledged full support for government efforts to decentralise key services, citing the move as essential for equitable development across Ghana.
NDPC Chairman Dr. Nii Moi Thompson made the announcement during the inauguration of the Commission's new members at the Jubilee House on May 20, 2025. He commended recent decisions by government to restore sanitation management responsibilities to district assemblies.
"When procurement and service management remain concentrated in Accra, it effectively extracts wealth from other regions,"
True development requires empowering districts to manage their own affairs and resources," Dr. Thompson stated.
He hinted, in support of decentralisation, the NDPC will revive the District Business Climate Survey to better understand local economic conditions.
The Commission will also work with banks to analyze lending patterns across regions, identifying areas that need more investment. These local development efforts connect to broader reforms.
Dr. Thompson explained the NDPC's plan to measure economic progress through three indicators - GDP growth, job creation and wage increases, rather than relying solely on GDP figures.
The Chairman also announced plans for digital tools allowing citizens to track government projects in their areas. "People should see how development funds are used," he said, describing this "civic auditing" as key to accountability.
With 37 commissioners and 8 dedicated sub-committees focusing on areas like the economy, transport, energy, and social development, the NDPC aims to integrate the voices of Ghanaians from all sectors into national development planning.
Dr. Thompson stressed the need for inclusive planning that draws on input from traditional leaders, businesses and local communities across Ghana.
